I am a trustee for Just Because, a registered charity which raises funds for breast cancer treatment for the women of Egypt - the birthplace of the dance I love and adore.
I joined the team towards the end of last year and I help out with the marketing and webstuff around all of the wonderful fund raising events held by bellydancers all over the UK.
I have set myself a personal challenge - to walk 100 miles over the next few weeks. Why 100 miles I hear you ask? Well, women in Egypt who can access some of the funded breast cancer treatment, can only access it in Cairo. If you happen to live in Cairo, wonderful! If you dont and you live in a more remote part of the country, you then have to travel to Cairo for your treatment and aftercare. This is another expense for women who's monthly incomes are very low and the large majority of women will have families to feed. I am aiming to cover the distance that a woman may have to travel to get access to her treatment.
So how am I going to do it?
Well, as I work fulltime, I can only do this by breaking it down into chunks of 5 miles. I aim to head to my local gym every day and walk (or cycle) a minimum of 5 miles per day. I will keep going until I have hit the 100 miles mark. The only issues I forsee, is that I have a few things pencilled in dance-wise - ie. Sara Farouks Last Stand in Manchester - this just means that for days I cant get to the gym, I will have to make up the mileage on other days when I am there - so for example I may have to cover 10 miles one day if I cant make it there the next day! Slightly challenging but its all for such a worthwhile cause!
This is a sponsored walk and I'm aiming to raise £600 in total which is the equivalent of the aftercare costs for 2 women. Its unlikely that I will ever know who these women are but thats ok with me - as long as they get the treatment and the aftercare, this is what I am concerned with.
If you want to sponsor me, please feel free to do so at http://www.justgiving.com/Abi-Hopkins - every single penny will go directly to the charity and the important work that we do. All of the trustees are volunteers so all monies raised goes directly into the charity accounts.
If you want to help in other ways, you can get some great ideas from our charity website at http://www.justbecause.org.uk or you can buy a keyring or a tshirt.
Many thanks
